Snapped key help
Broken Key Extraction
If a key has snapped or broken inside a lock, TLC can assess whether the broken piece can be removed and whether the lock still works safely afterwards. We focus on extraction, testing and practical next steps rather than replacing the lock unnecessarily.
When a key snaps
A broken key does not automatically mean the whole lock must be replaced.
Keys can break because they are worn, bent, forced, poorly copied or used in a stiff lock. Once the broken piece is removed, the lock needs testing so you know whether the original cause has been resolved or whether further repair or replacement is sensible.
What matters
The extraction is only part of the job.
Removing the broken key fragment can restore access, but the more important question is why the key snapped. A stiff lock, worn cylinder, misaligned door or damaged key can all be part of the story.
TLC checks the lock afterwards and explains whether replacement keys, lock repair or lock replacement should be considered. Full replacement is only discussed where it is genuinely required.
A broken key should be removed carefully, then the lock should be tested before anyone relies on it again.

Restore access
If the door is locked shut, access is restored where possible.
- Test
Check the lock
The lock is tested to see whether it still operates properly.

Explain the cause
We explain likely causes such as wear, stiffness or alignment.

Questions customers ask
Broken key extraction FAQs.
Clear answers when a key has snapped and the lock may still be usable.
Can TLC remove a broken key from a lock?
Yes. TLC can assess broken keys inside locks and remove the fragment where practical.
Does a snapped key mean I need a new lock?
Not always. The lock should be tested after extraction before replacement is recommended.
What causes keys to snap?
Wear, bending, poor copies, stiff locks, misalignment and force can all contribute to a key breaking.
Should I try to pull the key out myself?
Avoid forcing it. Pushing or twisting the fragment can make extraction harder or damage the lock.
Can you help if the door is locked shut?
Yes. TLC can assess the lock and restore access where possible.
Can replacement keys be arranged?
Where appropriate, replacement key options can be discussed after the lock has been checked.
Can a broken key damage the cylinder?
It can, especially if force has been used. The cylinder should be tested afterwards.
Is this the same as a lock upgrade?
No. This service is about extraction and testing, not planned security improvement.
Can businesses call about broken keys?
Yes. Broken keys in office, shop and managed-property locks can be assessed where authorisation is clear.
What if the lock is faulty after extraction?
TLC will explain whether repair or replacement is the safer next step.
